Pest and Weed Control Training in Tom Price

AAC Job Seekers from Tom Price, Wakathuni, Munjina, Bellary Springs and Paraburdoo successfully completed 3 units in Weed Control with Greg McKonkie from Empower Education. The course content; Control Weeds, Prepare and Apply Chemicals and Transport, Handle and Store Chemicals was jam packed into 4 days.

There was never a dull moment as the theory component was delivered, followed by practical training using the required PPE and handheld equipment. As part of their practical training, the group applied chemicals to control pests at 3 houses in Tom Price and Wakathuni. They also applied chemicals to the invasive Leucaena weed trees around a site in Tom Price. These grow everywhere, and are such a nuisance. So far, the trees that have been sprayed are dying. This alone could be an incredible business venture for any of the course participants.

The participants visited the Sodexo warehouse in Tom Price and were shown how their chemicals are stored and transported and specifically what procedures they had in place. Suddenly, their theory training all made sense as they saw the application of safe work practices, record-keeping of chemicals and storage procedures.

They then had the opportunity to observe pesticide technicians in action at Windawarie Lodge, a site managed by Sodexo. We’d like to thank Darren Morland and the team at Sodexo for hosting us on both sites, and answering all our participant questions.

On the final day, the team were awarded certificates upon the successful completion of the course. We are so proud of their achievements, and look forward to hosting the next course for AAC Jobseekers with the amazing Greg McKonkie.
