On a quest to empower job seekers, our inaugural Try-A-Trade workshop unfolded at Onslow Tyres, providing participants with an immersive experience as they stepped into the shoes of a tyre fitter. At the heart of this endeavor lies the acknowledgment of the pivotal role tyre fitters play in ensuring the safety and roadworthiness of vehicles. Here, we delve into the key responsibilities that eager job seekers had the opportunity to master during this enlightening workshop.
Mastering Employability Skills
Beyond gaining proficiency in the tools of the trade, our Try-A-Trade workshop placed a strong emphasis on developing essential employability skills. Participants honed their communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management abilities – skills universally valued by employers across various industries.
1. Tyre Inspection and Maintenance
The workshop unfolded the art of assessing tire conditions, identifying wear and tear, and executing routine maintenance procedures to enhance tire lifespan. Participants delved into the intricacies of keeping tires in optimal condition for prolonged use.
2. Repair Techniques
Job seekers explored various repair methods for damaged tires, acquiring hands-on experience with the tools needed to patch, plug, or fix punctures. This practical knowledge is invaluable for those considering a future in the trade of tyre fitting.
3. Tyre Replacement
From demounting and mounting to balancing, participants gained insights into the comprehensive process of tire replacement. This hands-on experience ensures that they are well-versed in guaranteeing optimal performance and safety.
4. Safety Protocols
Safety is paramount in any trade, and job seekers at Onslow Tyres mastered safety protocols and best practices associated with tire fitting. This knowledge not only ensures a secure working environment but also minimises risks related to the tire fitting process.
Over the course of the 4-week program, participants dedicated three days a week, with six hours each day, to hands-on experience in various trade areas. This intensive engagement totaled 18 hours per week, providing an immersive and comprehensive introduction to the dynamic realm of trades.
Onslow Tyres has extended a unique opportunity to local AAC job seekers in Onslow, recognizing the cultural responsibilities and immersion in Aboriginal lore that individuals in the area hold. Those participants currently engaged in these cultural responsibilities have an additional two weeks to finalise their training in the New Year. Upon successful completion, AAC is poised to honour and celebrate their achievements with a certificate of completion and a graduation ceremony.
