Our community was recently blessed with a valuable lesson in the intricate knowledge of native plants from the Aboriginal people of the Wakathuni Community. Led by the knowledgeable AAC Jobseekers, members of the Ashburton Shire Grounds Team embarked on an enriching bush walk through Paraburdoo, immersing themselves in the land’s rich cultural heritage.
During the walk, participants learned about the traditional uses of native plants for food, medicine, and other purposes. The session highlighted how the changing seasons and environmental elements impact these plants’ growth and life cycles. This shared wisdom not only educates people about the vast array of native plants but also plays a crucial role in preserving Aboriginal culture and fostering reconciliation within the community.
Inspired by the knowledge passed down by the AAC Jobseekers and staff, plans are underway to create community gardens and nurseries specialising in native plants. These initiatives will not only preserve and promote the significance of native flora but will also provide a platform for sharing this wisdom with others. This will nurture a deeper connection to the land and foster a spirit of care and stewardship for our country.
