Rowan’s Walk: A Community Walks Together

Rowan’s Walk, a community-led event dedicated to mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

As the late afternoon sun dipped behind the hills of Paraburdoo, locals of all ages gathered with a shared purpose – to walk, to remember, and to support one another as part of Rowan’s Walk, a community-led event dedicated to mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

Rowan’s Walk is more than a walk. It is a symbol that carries the weight of loss, the strength of unity, and the quiet light of hope. Originally inspired by Rowan Dann, who walked in memory of a loved one lost to suicide, the movement has since grown across the Pilbara.

The event began with a Welcome to Country by Ida Injie, grounding the evening in respect for the land and its people. Community members gathered at the Karaingal Neighbourhood Centre in Paraburdoo. Children held their parents’ hands, elders walked with quiet strength, and many carried photos or memories close to their hearts. Together, they took each step in reflection and support – walking not just through the streets, but toward healing.

As the sky darkened, a candlelight ceremony brought warmth and meaning to the gathering. Candles were lit in honour of those lost to suicide, each flame representing a life remembered, a loved one missed, and a community choosing to keep their memory alive. A powerful moment of silence followed, as the entire crowd stood still in quiet reflection, honouring lives lost and offering collective strength to those still struggling.

Adding to the significance of the evening, Paraburdoo Maudi Cultural groups from New Zealand performed traditional haka and waiata and shared powerful stories. Their presence added depth and spirit to the event, reminding everyone of the healing role that culture and community can play.

Beyond the walk and performances, the evening created space for yarning – quiet conversations, heartfelt stories, and moments of listening and being heard. A community BBQ, music and shared laughter followed, helping to bring comfort, connection, and togetherness.
