Community Collaboration: Recovery Efforts After Cyclone Zelia
In a heartwarming demonstration of community solidarity, Kellie, a mentor from Ashburton Aboriginal Corporation, teamed up with Fabian Jilba, a participant in the “Pay Your Fines” program, to support the Department of Communities (DOC) Emergency Relief and Support team in restoring the JD Hardie Centre in South Hedland. This centre had provided temporary shelter for residents from Warralong and Strelley who were evacuated due to flooding from Cyclone Zelia.
In addition to their cleaning efforts, Ashburton Aboriginal Corporation generously donated 15 cases of Yurama water to assist those unable to return to their homes in the cyclone’s aftermath.
Kellie and Fabian dedicated their time to scrubbing both the interior and exterior windows and mopping floors to ensure the centre was ready for its staff’s return. Their hard work and commitment did not go unnoticed.
Kirrily and Michael from the DOC team were particularly impressed by Fabian’s contributions. As a token of their appreciation, they presented him with a box of Roses chocolates, recognising the collaborative spirit and determination that characterised the efforts to support the affected communities.
